966 TA Issue

My TA hesitates like I push the clutch in for a split second when I go from low TA to high TA under load. It never feels like it slips, it just hits firm. If I stop with field cultivator in the ground, it never feels like it is slipping when I start off again. Is it the MCV sticking or where should I start looking?

The TA control valve may be sticking, and not letting it release the rear clutch as it engages the front (direct clutch) If it feels like it goes into a tiny neutral, that is my guess. If it just kind of grabs into direct, that might be normal. Are you moving the lever from one to the other as rapidly as possible which is correct, or slowly, easing it in, Which is incorrect, and causes problems? Jim

I have used IH tractors with TA since 1964 and the dealer people said move the lever quick so that is how we always do it. Maybe not as fast as an electronic shift but not sliding it in.

On the 966, it feels like the engine releases briefly and then grabs normal, not a violent grab. It is the hesitation I am concerned with. I checked the pressure last spring out of curosity and it was good. Tractor has not had much use and no load on it since spring. I have not had a MCV apart. Any cautions or tips?

Thanks
