f400 starter intermittent drain

farmall 400 gas. have two rebuilt starter. both will on ocasion not start and drain battery after i turn key. boost and start aok. i am going to check ring gear teeth. dead spot on armature ? heavy duty pinion ? what will fix this ?

There is a better Starter drive. The issue is probably not the starter. If the battery is drained and things get hot, the starter relay (miscalled the solenoid) is sticking. If you know the relay is good, and the starter is not staying on, the battery may be bad, or not charging sufficiently. Starters of the type found on that tractor do not stay on by them selves. Jim
