WD9 Dual Exhaust

There's an ad on the YT Photo Ads wherein the seller claims the dual exhaust on a WD9 are 'factory'. Now it could well be that a factory did build that set up, but I wasn't aware of IHC ever offering that as an option, and it doesn't show up in any parts book that I have.

Anybody know?

Huh, so there are two cyls feeding one exhaust pipe? In line??? I have never seen such a thing and it isn't in the parts book. I would like to learn more about it.

Frankly, a lot of people claim things are "factory." He probably claims the paint job is "factory" too...

Since the center cylinders share the same exhaust port in the head. From the placement of the mufflers I think the manifold is open to all cylinders with just another outlet added.

Never seen anything like that - no way it came from the factory. Further a dual exhaust on a WD9 makes no sense since the engine has THREE exhaust ports (middle 2 cylinders share the center port as sflem849 and D Slater point out).

I suspect rather that tractor has had a tee fitting installed atop the stock manifold with the tee's run outlets feeding the mufflers.

Incidentally I once ran across a UD9 power unit (same engine as the WD9) in a Bucyrus dragline crane with a straight-piped triple exhaust. It had obviously been "home built" to replace the original 3-leg manifold.

Its kinda hard to tell in the photo but don't the muffles look to be on the opposite side of the tractor, don't the 9 series use the same exhaust location as the 6 series and md's? Jim.

They are on the right side, litterally. You can see the rear muffler is on the side closest to you, in front of the hood bulge for the guages. That would be correct for a diesel model.

Here are a couple pictures of a TD18A, that I just finished repairing. This had factory dual exhaust. Three cylinders feeding exhaust to each muffler.

I know this thread is a little old, but just thought I would add a little. I'm a mechanic, and I was called to work on this tractor. This tractor was built "as it is" before the original owner ever brought it home from the dealer. Dual exhaust: an extra port welded on the rear corner of the manifold, an extra coolant tank: notice the silver cap between the second muffler and diesel fuel cap, and factory installed grip tires on the front: the farmers land has rolling hills and the smooth tires wouldn"t hold when on a side hill. The paint scheme is factory, as well as the grill. I forgot to get the serial number off it, but the farmer says it is not listed in any books. He said he had a guy from Ohio call him, and said he could tell him "all about that tractor", but wouldn"t really say anything.

'er no

Sounds like bunk to me! I've never seen a WD9 nor relatives (Super WD9, ID9, TD9, UD9, etc) with dual exhaust. Nor is there any mention in the parts books.

Also consider this: The exhaust porting on the WD9 engine is somewhat unique. Cylinders #1 and #4 have their own separate ports. But cyl's #2 and #3 are "siamezed" into a common port. Consequently a TRIPLE exhaust is possible.

Now a dual exhaust could be done. But it would require fabricating a custom manifold to connect exhaust ports #1 and #4. It just doesn't make much sense...

I am skeptical too.

Wouldn't you think that if this thing was legit that the owner would take the hood off and take lots of pics to show us "keyboard experts" what really is under the hood? Show me the details and if it looks factory built then I might give it some fair consideration. As it sits now, it makes me think the owner is hiding something.

You think they would also know the gas tank from a "extra coolant tank"
