My great uncles farm equip is being sold on an online auction. I thinking of bidding on one of the old tractors -if the price is right. The 450 runs,I'm not sure if the H runs.Which model is the best option to find parts or purchase to restore? they are both on Fahey Auction listed under the tirle "Complete Line of Farm Equipment Auction" Thank you for any comments.

The 450 is more usable, bigger, has PS (probably) has a TA, has IPTO, and live hydraulics. It is a "modern" tractor in most senses of the word. The H is a good tractor, but very common, and has modest pulling power, and none of the features above. I vote 450 Jim

I vote for the 450, ive wanted one of those for a while, twice the tractor of an H. Good Luck, give us some pictures if you get either one!

Depends on what you want to use the tractor for.
If just fixing up for a show or to take for a spin or light duty the H. H is less work and simple to fix up, parts plentiful and most times less costly and less weight to haul. Also uses less fuel.
For a work tractor the 450 would probably be the pick unless you have more of a attachment for one tractor over the other.

An H makes an ideal first project for a tractor rookie. Simple mechanics, simple paint, common as rain, all parts available and cheap.

It only weighs about 4000lbs if you strip off all the wheel weights and drain any fluid out of the rear tires. With the rear wheels slid all the way in, it can be hauled on a common car hauler trailer with most any F150. That might be a consideration if you plan on taking it to shows.

The 450 is a lot more complex tractor. At the core its similar to the H, only bigger, but it has a bunch of extra stuff bolted on to make it into a modern tractor. If the TA needs replacing, that's not cheap. If the PTO is shot, that's REALLY not cheap.

The 450 is a ~6500lb tractor. You really should have a heavy-duty deckover trailer and an F250 size pickup or more to haul one.

If you're going to use one to farm, go for the 450. Just as a fun thing and a keepsake, something to paint up and make look nice, get the H.

mkirsh is 'spot on',100% correct. If I might add,if the 450 is a diesel, that engine can be very expencive to fix if it goes down. They can be complicated for a beginner.IH made close to 400,000 Hs from '39 to '52.Lots of stuff is still out there for an H.The 450 was only made for 2 years. For me personally,I would rather have the 450...
