Black stripe??

The last year 66 series tractors were built, they put a black strip on the hood. they had some of the 86 series features and a few more ponies. Kent
 
Adding to the last post they were only built in 1976. Some of the late ones had 86 series trannys and rear ends. You can tell this by the serial tag location. If the tag is on the left side bell housing it's a 66 series rear. If the tag is on the right side on the trans case it's the start of the 86 series.

Cousin had a 1466 with the Turbo decal and a 1066 black stripe at the same time. I found no basic difference in the two tractors except the increased horsepower of the 1466
 
If it was to have 86 series part like a trany then would it have a four speed insted of the three that this one has??
 
No. The 1586 also had a 3-speed main transmission.

There is very little difference between the basic design and construction of the 66 and 86 series transmissions. The 86 series transmissions simply had minor improvements over the 66 series. We're talking about a different bearing here and there, maybe a slightly different gear ratio, different hardening process used on the gears, that type of thing.

It's not like the 86 series transmission is some revolutionary piece of technology compared to the 66 series.
 
Agreed that the differences weren't much between
the 66 and 86 trannys and rear ends, sorry that I
implied otherwise.

As far as the 3 speed, that was because the 15's
used a much bigger rear end only allowing the use
of three gears instead of 4? That is my
understanding anyways. I've heard it's tough to
keep a rear end in a 1486 due too the higher horse
power.

The 1566 and the 1586 both had six speed transmissions. The 1466 and 1486 and everything down had eight speed transmissions and optional TA's. The 1466,1486,1566 and 1586 all used the 436 cu in motor. The 14's were rated at 145hp and the 15's 160hp. The 1466 and 1566 black stripe, built in 1976 only, used the same hitch parts as the 86 series tractors. 1976 was the last years for the 66 series and the first years for the 86 series.
