From 1952 thru 1953 or 54 Super M's were built. They made a few changes to the M and called it a Super M.

So the S stands for Super.

The SM is silk-screened on the tag, not stamped, but basically, yes to your question.

A regular M will have FBK on the serial tag.

A true Super M serial number will begin with either SM or L depending in which plant it was assembled (SM = Rockford; L = Louisville).

Bear in mind there are MANY regular M tractors around with Super M decals applied. Buyer beware!

Letters SM will be near the top left corner looking at the serial tag the way you would read it on a super M. Serial number and its prefix and sufix letters will be on a different level than the SM or SMD if a diesel. If a S follows the serial number on the same level it may be a super MTA. LP tractors can also have letters.

Rockford??? Isn't it Rock Island?

Here is my Super M tag. Just to give a little view of what they look like with the SM on them.
