706 Engine Identification

I know there were several different gas engines for the 706. Is there a number on the engine somewhere or some other obvious way to identify? I found the serial number on the clutch housing and it shows it"s a "66. Can"t find any info on the letters "S-Y" following the serial number though. They must be options I"m guessing. I also have a 504 that"s the same year with the letters "sXY-FF" after the serial numbers. Only references for serial numbers I can find just show date of manufacture.

There were only two gas engines, the C263 and the C291. The C263 went into the early 706's, and the C291 was installed in the later ones.

The engine size is cast into the block below the spark plugs. Engine size is not indicated on the serial tag.

Being a '66, yours could be either. I think that's the year they changed.

263 or 291 on the gasser, diesel were 282 or 310. there was a serial number break at some point when they switched to the larger engines.

S-Y suffix indicates you have a TA and 12 gpm hyd pump.

There is a flat machined surface below the dist next to the oil filter and it will be STAMPED as to the cu. in. IF there is no stamping then the block at one time was replaced.

I found it...it is STAMPED in the block...it"s a 263. It does have TA so the letters make sense as well. Thanks for replies. Only numbers I havn"t found yet are on the carb. Maybe it had a brass tag under one of the bowl to body bolts that"s missing?
