966 clutch PTO

How difficult is it to rebuild the PTO on a 966. Does it require special tools? Can the average shade tree mechanic figure it out. i know you have to drain all hy-tran out to do it??? What manual would be best for accurate instructions???
 
Most will probably say to take it to a shop to have it done. It requires a special spring compressor tool and the pressure gauge to set it correctly.
T.V. will tell you how he could do with one hand behind his back and one eye plucked out in about 3 hours. You will probably want the original manual from Binder Books.
 
It all depends on how deep ya want to go into it . IF you want to replace the clutch pack then the only thing ya need is the fitting to go into the test port and a good hyd . pressure gauge to check and reset if needed and a cherry picker to help ya remove and install . If you want to go deeper then ya need a spring compressor to compress the spring to get the clutch drum off to get back into the brakes and seals. , and you will need a piston ring compressor to compress the new teflon seals when you install them . a seal driver helps when installing the seals.

Takes about a half hour to do just the clutch pack. Run the front end down in the ditch. Pull the PTO. Four bolts and a snap ring and you can get the clutch plates out. Then a week later you can do it again because when the clutch failed it cooked the seal and caused the new clutch pack failed.
 
We literally used to pull the PTO units under the shade tree, because there was a very short, steep hill there. Back the tractor up on the hill so you didn't have to dump the hydraulic oil.
