Advance sticks on my BN mag

About every year or so I have to pull the mag off my BN, take off the advance assembly and clean the gunk out. Why? Cause when I go to start the tractor, particularly when it gets cold, it kicks back badly and I cannot start it. The weights get gunky and then stick out or advanced when I shut it off. Next time I go to start it...kickback. I change the oil regularly so it"s not like there is tar in there lubricating things. I don"t work the tractor much to get it hot, is it just collecting moisture and gunking up the weights with their tiny little springs?

There should be an oiler on it and use some kerosene, diesel fuel or similar lube regularly. Pretty hard to keep that area free of condensation. The pins and weights get worn also and don't move quite like they are supposed to. Ya, those springs are not much but if any stronger they won't disengage properly either.
 
The mags were supposed to be removed and drive end washed out with Kerosene once a yr. Ive had mags for 50pluss yrs and have never had anyproblems with them gunking up as plenty of oil is splashed up in the area. Has tsomeone made a new gasket and it blocks the oil from getting there.
 
Should be two oilers on it. One on distributor gear and one on impulse. If one on impulse has a felt in it the kerosene won't get down in very fast though. I honestly can't remember if it does or not. Been quite a few years since I repaired them.
 
What mag is on the tractor as the original one doesent have any springs on the wts just the bushing and the thrust bearing the center shaft has a spring loaded pin to keep the gear positioned on the cam gear you must not have the original H-4 cause there isnt any springs on the wts. Do you need a good original mag that works for the BN.
 
Spring in pawl is shown in parts manual above a certain serial number. It isn't much of a spring but they are in there.
