C-123 C motor rear main seal.

I've had a small oil leak under the tractor for
years. Last Feb. put new gaskets on the oil pump
assembly (since it was apart) and replaced the oil
pan gasket. Still leaks. Now I have to believe it
is the rear main seal. I have worked on many
engines over the years and never had any issues
with this type of repair. However, everything i
have done with seals like this were when the motor
was upside down on a stand. Can i do this with
the motor still in place or is it near impossible?
Is it hard to get the bearing and cap back in
place?

I know someone out there has tried this...

Joshua, you need the flywheel off the crankshaft to service that rear main. So you do it on the engine stand or the bench.

Thanks guys, I knew someone's been through this. Best to know this now before i get stuck and it requires a complete teardown. (I have a tendancy to bite off more than i can chew)

Rear seal is in behind flywheel in a pot metal two piece retainer. Seal is two piece felt. Also, there is a pot metal plate under the retainer. Both warp out of shape seriously. You can service both with a split at clutch housing and pan removed.

Here is a picture of a splitting stand that I designed to split a Farmall A, B and C series tractor. The stand is shown on a BN. Once the flywheel is removed the seal retainer can be removed. Two pieces of felt are used to seal around the crankshaft. Make sure to check the holder for warping, they have the tendency to warp badly. My local machine shop is able to flaten them so they can be reused. Good luck.
