Super Governor

Last fall I bought a 1954 Farmall Super C tractor and I don't believe the governor is working properly. I bought a 6 foot finish mower for the three-point hitch, and when I was using it this summer, every time I push in the clutch the engine revs way up high, so I've been pulling back on a throttle before I push the clutch in to get by for now. Also when I bring the throttle back down to idle it still idles quite fast, and I grab the link that goes from the governor to the carburetor to idle it down slower but then it usually stalls out. Also there is a fuel cap on the governor housing which I have not seen on any other Super C tractor. The cap on the governor housing reads buy clean fuel, keep it clean. When looking at the governor housing it it does not look like anything's been fabricated, that it was made that way from factory. Has anybody seen anything like this before?

Well , somethings been fabricated out of a fuel cap ...Can you post some pix ?? We'd reall like to see this !!

I tried to download some pictures but for some reason they do not go thru. I went on this site for the first time last Sunday, and I was told that they might not be going through because I am a new subscriber! I went to upload photo, then to browse, then to my pictures, double-click on the picture, and then upload, then to preview your reply, then submit reply.

Your Super C probably has a governor housing off a 240 or 340's engine.

That is the oil fill location on those tractors. On a Super C you fill through the breather sticking out the middle of the hood.

Racing engine indicates a stretched, broken or missing spring in the governor.

You are wrong. A spring that is stretched, broken or missing will not speed up the engine RPM's. Remember , the spring opens the throttle & the flyweights close it.

Well excuse me. When the governor spring on our Super C broke, the engine raced out of control. When the thrust bearing went to pot, it wouldn't come off idle.
