300 TA operation

I am wondering if I have the TA on my 300 adjusted correctly and if I am using it properly. I adjusted it following the step by step procedure in my I&T manual. In high I am able to shift up through gears just as I would with my H but when I stop and go to shift into reverse the shifter will often not move until I pull the TA lever back, especially if I the tractor is pointing uphill. I think I read somewhere that the sprague clutch is supposed to keep the tractor from rolling back when I step on the clutch pedal, but is it also supposed to not let the shift lever move? Any advice will be much appreciated. I do know to move the TA rapidly between low and high, I have heard that said many times on this site.

NO , you do not have it set . when they were new you went BY THE BOOK . BUT now that it has had extensive years of field testing you now have ware every place . So now come learning how to Make it work . Fist get your free travel on the main clutch , then ya start adjusting the T/A clutch linkage so that when ya have the clutch pedal down the T/A clutch is also disengaged and as you start to come up on the main clutch the T/A clutch is already locking up before the main comes in .
 
The Vet is correct (as usual) there is no hill holding feature intended in the design. It does act that way, but it is not to be relied on.
I adjust a worn set of linkages so that the pedal releases the shifter when pushed down 1/2 the distance to the full pedal travel from the place where the main clutch begins to move the tractor. As the vet said, set the master clutch freeplay, (1.25 inches from the platform measured at the point where the pedal arm touches the platform. Next, tape a wooden 12" ruler next to the clutch arm so it sticks out forward past the pedal about 6 inches. With clear space ahead of the tractor, put it in first direct, and let out the clutch slowly. as you begin to move note the location of the beginning of tractor movement on the ruler (the number doesn't matter, it only allows you to know where the clutch starts to move the tractor.)
Stop the tractor, and mark that spot on the ruler.
with it shut off, and looking at the ruler, note how far it is from that mark, to fully pushed pedal. Set the TA clutch so it releases at 1/2 that distance. this setting allows the pedal push to release both clutches when pushed (correctly) to its travel stop. and assures that the TA clutch is fully engaged before the master clutch begins to move the power into the gears. On a mechanical TA there are three adjustments you need to get correct.

1) free travel on the engine clutch

2) free travel on the TA clutch

3) the TA clutch shaft must move as soon as either the engine clutch pedal or the TA clutch lever is moved

To adjust the linkage start by disconnecting the main clutch linkage pin at the clutch shaft. Remove the interconnecting link and spring between the engine clutch shaft and TA clutch shaft.

Adjust the TA clutch linkage so that with the lever ahead and the pin in the slotted hole, the pin will move 3/16 on an inch between the front of the slot and the point where the release bearing contacts the levers on the clutch pressure plate. Hold the pin to the rear to compensate for worn pin and hole when making this measurement. That takes care of the first adjustment.

The next step is to set the engine clutch free travel. Hold the bottom of the clutch to the rear and adjust until you have an inch of free travel on the pedal. Holding the lever to the rear will compensate for worn pin and hole.

The last step is to connect the spring between the engine clutch shaft and the TA clutch shaft. Adjust the connecting link as short as possible without moving either shaft while inserting the pins.

Check the adjustment by watching the TA clutch shaft as you move either the engine clutch pedal or the TA lever. The TA clutch shaft should move as soon as either lever is moved.

Dynamic testing can be done by driving the front of the tractor up hill. With the TA ahead and the tractor in a forward gear, the engine clutch should should release about have way down. About 3/4 of the way down the TA clutch should release and the tractor begin to roll backward. This will ensure that the TA clutch engages before the engine clutch. If it does not engage first you will get a double shift when you release the clutch.
 
The short linkage from the clutch arm to the TA arm has the same effect as pulling the TA lever.

Binding up is a GOOD sign, though. Means the TA is good. If it didn't bind up like that, the ramp and rollers are shot.

I have just put my 400 together and it was acting as described above where it would not shift if there was pressure on the gears. Thought it was odd but did it according to the book so it must be right.

Going to have to give it another look.

I had it all apart over the summer so I know the ramp and rollers
are good, I just had to reassemble them when putting the TA back
together.

If it won't just slide out of gear without pulling TA lever, minor external linkage problem. Others on this forum are much better mechanics than I'll ever be, but over the years, I've corrected a 300 and a 460 that behaved as yours. All I had was the operators manual and followed it. If I remember right, I think I did the adjustments of the external linkages while tractor sat on a slight downhill grade.
