Loop style is adjustable for different row spacings. Wedge style is non-adjustable. I think the wedge style was standard. Loop style was optional at extra cost. Far as I know, both were available at the same time.

Older has nothing to do with the type. Ive always wondered why on the A why did they leave the factory with adjustable rims and the hubs must have been a supply problem cause why adjustable rim on an adjustable wide front.

You are right. Generally the adjustable rims don't give you much if you already have the adjustable axle. But they do give you widths between what you get from just the axle and you can go as much as 6 inches wider than you can with only the axle adjustment.

I don't think the 16-inch rims were made with loose lugs either. So you needed to go with adjustable rims to get 6.00x16 tires.
