IH 240 rear whee hub question

I have a 1960 240 utility. I have noticed that it has a leak coming from the rear axle, where the 4 bolt cover is, but looks like its coming from the seal, not in between the cover and housing. I have removed the wheel and here is the question: How do I remove the hub that the wheel actually bolts on to? it looks like its just splined onto the shaft, and I saw a snap ring at the end of the shaft under a cover held on by a single bolt, but it looks like all that snap ring does is locates where the hub is seated. Is that hub pressed onto the shaft? if so, do i need a puller to get it off, because i dont want to start beating and tear something up. thanks for any info. God Bless America.

I've never been into one of those so I'm just spitballing here. I think you're looking at the wrong end of the axle. Get a service manual I think you might find to service the seal in question you remove the whole axle. If this is so you'll probably have to pull the top cover on the rear end and remove the retaining clip, pin or bolt pull the axle replace the seal and reinstall the axle.

I may be looking at the wrong end,i'm not a tractor expert at all. but let me tell you what I do know. I removed the tire, and after i couldnt get the hub off, I took the 4 bolts off the cover on the end of the housing just to get a look. after sliding the cover back, i can see the seal. I just dont know if the hub on the end of the axle is supposed to come off or if I would have to remove the whole axle? I believe there has to be a seal in the remmovable cover I loosened because there is a bearing directly behind it.

I have never been into mine, but the parts breakdown just shows a washer and 1/2-13x1" cap screw on the outer end. However, in the I&T manual it does not show the 240U, but I know some things to be similar to or the same as the 404/2404. For the 404, it shows taking the entire shaft out, which is held in by a snap-ring on the inner end of the axle shaft. Then of course, the I&T manual says[u:88ea25c33d] some things should be obvious[/u:88ea25c33d]... yeah, right!!

well if the 240 is the same as the 340 then just remove the cap and end bolt from the axle and it should just slide off. either need a big puller or get it started with another tractor and give it a few jerks.

Just replaced the seals on the hubs of int 330, to remove the hubs i just removed the cap bolt and pounded lightly on the back side of the hub with a hammer, they slid right off. Hope this helps.

The hub will come off the axle. It's probably just stuck with rust.

That's better than what we found on Dad's W400. The splines were wore and the hubs pretty much just fell off when he went to replace the axle seals!

Iam also trying to replace bearings/seals on rear axle on a 404 utility. how do you get the snap ring out of the wheel hub? or can everything be replaced from bull gear side? iam stumped IT manual is good for starting a fire.
