My 1940 H has a problem with surging when under no load. It runs fine when put under load. I did some work to the governor a few years back to improve throttle response when I replaced the governor weights and pins as well as the gov. spring. Throttle response is great now but I have the surging problem [which I don"t think I had before]. I have checked the linkage to the gov. as well as the linkage between the gov. and carb., I can"t see any excessive play anywhere. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks |

| With the tractor warmed up for 15 minutes or so. set the static timing and make sure the centrifugal advance is allowing full advance at high idle (assumes distributor, not Mag. Mags have no advance)(full throttle no load) Idle it down to slowest idle. Set the idle speed to about 500 or as slow as is reasonable. Adjust the idle mixture screw in and out until the idle is as fast and smooth as possible. Readjust the speed. and repeat the mixture adjustment, finessing it to smooth. if the surging goes away, great! If it does not, it at least sure not the mixture settings or IGN. Internal and external governor settings and surge suppression adjustment should make it correct. Jim |

| | Couple of things I have encountered wrenching with Hs for 20 some years. In the governor, check the thruster bearing and make sure it is sliding back and forth horizontally but not wiggling. Had that happen on a 1951H. But it surged whether loaded or not loaded. Other thought is look at the end of the throttle rod on the top of the engine and inspect the control rod swivel assembly on the end. It might be loose or even have a spring missing. Had another H that had that problem. |

| | I'm right in the middle of diagnosing this problem with my Super C. From what I've learned from this sight it either comes down to inconsistent fuel flow, loose linkage internally in the governor or externally between the governor and the carb. Assuming the rebuilt governor is working fine and the fact that it only surges under load, I'm betting you have a fuel restriction. Be sure and post back the fix. |
