I had the starter, rebuilt. i installed the starter. but it won!t turn the engine over. i hooked it up to my truck battery, twelve volt. the starter turns the engine, when hooked to the twelve volt battery. i also checked the voltage from the battery to the starter. it is getting six volts going into the starter. |

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeHow close to 6 volts do you have at the starter WHILE YOU ARE CRANKING? If it drops too much, you have a bad connection. Measuring 6 volts at the starter when not cranking doesn't mean much.

James, Farmall C and super C Had bad grounding point. Remove the gound cable from the sheetmetal on the steering pedistal and bolt it to the casting with the bolt under the battery box. Good ground and your starter will work fine. oldiron29

Clean tight and bright so you have to make sure ALL connections are good plus you have to have the correct size battery cables. A battery cable can also go bad and you can not see when they do and 12 volts can make things work with poor connections or bad cables

+ or - ground make no difference to a starter it will still spin the same direction not mater which way it is hooked up

Check the battery cable from the battery all the way to the starer. It must be in good shape and without corrosion on the ends. Too much resistance and it will not work. People will tell you to have at least 00 size cable, if I remember correctly.

I checked the cables to the starter. they are good. ichecked them with a meter. question, if the brass stud inside the starter is not making good contact, with the switch, could that be the problem?

| | James, I had the post on top of the starter (under the switch) replaced on my C. Made a big difference. I can sit on my seat now and start the tractor, before I had to stand beside tbe tractor and pull like heck several times to engage the starter. And yes, additional ground from battery to torque tube is a big help. Dave |

> I checked the cables to the starter. they are > good. ichecked them with a meter. An ordinary meter will only tell you that they are not completely open. A small fraction of an ohm of resistance is enough to keep the starter from turning. Check the voltage at the starter while it is trying to turn the engine over.

Does it spin over really fast with the 12 volt battery? Or normal for 12 volt? It's possible the wrong stuff was installed by your rebuilder.

Like has been mentioned before, the grounds on the C, SC are not very good at the pedestal, and yes you can take the switch off of the starter, and look at the contact, if it is pitted or dirty, polish it with a wire brush or emery cloth. Some rebuilders are just, almost rebuilders, the switch should have been replaced.
