Did some plowing last night after dinner with my favorite SH and 2 bottom plow. About 2 acres of corn stalks, blocked up 3 times, lift wheel kept wanting to skid on the damp leaves, and tail wheel went flat without me even noticing in the dark. lol How did my Dad and Grandpa ever get the plowing done each fall ! From 53 til 63, this very rig is what they used to plow half or more of the 200 acres. It sometimes took them 3 weeks or more ... Makes me respect how hard the old timers worked on these machines !

Mike. Those Corn stalks can be a "blue bi#$c" to deal with. Our SH and Little Genius 2-16 do as good a job plowing as anything we have until we get into corn ground...that and the fact that IH coulda took a hint from JD and put a good comfy well supported bigger seat for my fat azz usually means that when we hit the stalks it's on the JD B or A with the Oliver 2-16 plowmaster which plain old doesn't plug, or the JD 70 with the IH 3-16 500 in tow as it has the high clearance and BIG trash boards so doesn't usually plug! But what fun the SH and Lil Genius is in good clean ground!

Got to have a good disc with sharp blades to disc the cornstalks and pull a harrow then you can go. Thats how we did it. Got to have the stalks dry as when they are wet the disc just wont cut them up very good. 200A isnt all that bad for an H.

You are right, when I used to farm " for real " I often disced before plowing to saw up the stalks and trash which helped prevent plugging , also it just lets the plow do a better job. Sometimes baled up the stalks too.

My Grand Father and my Dad farmed 220 acres with a MD and an A. I asked my Dad what they used the A for? He said mostly to tow the MD to get it started, and then he laughted. Kent

Mike,I was gonna mention earlier I am glad you realize what your Dad and Grandpa did on 200 acres with just a Super H.

At the plow event you see my photo of,me and several other guys told these same very same kind of stories. An older fellow I live near told me the story of him and his brother doing BIG acreage with just 1 M Farmall. They ran it with a plow 24 hrs a day around the clock NEVER shutting it off! They slept in shifts and only stopped to switch drivers and add fuel.

The things we do with these old tractors as a hobby/light duty stuff, some guys depended on thier very lively hood upon them!! THAT is why I love them so much!

Glad you apreciate the history like I do. ;)

Yes ! Before my Grandpa bought this SH , he and his brother shared a regular H back and forth between both 200 acre farms. I often thought, if those old Farmalls had hourmeters it would be atonishing I am sure !

When your dad and grandad did it, if they went out in the evening, then they went out after supper. When they went to the field after dinner, they would have been working in the afternoon. :) :D

No trash or stalks there to block her up ! I dont "really" farm anymore myself, but I have plowed alot with this set-up, a SM with 3 bottom, an Oliver 1800 with 3 bottom, and an 886 with 4 bottoms. I get just enough of it now that it still remains fun to do.

I never saw a SH Farmall in this area, maybe because I was in the Army from 1953 til 1955. Still don't see any. From the H we jumped to the 300 then my dad quit farming. Hal
