alex t 10-18-2012 20:36:28 98.132.231.144 Report to Moderator	i have a ih 400 block (c264) that i want to put in a farmall m. my plan is to put the 4 1/8 fire crater overbore pistons from hy-capacity in this c264, will a 8060 head off of a farmall m fit or will the pistons hit the head? any advice would be helpful. thanks, alex [Reply]   [No Email]

Don't know if they are the same piston shape on the top or different. When IH made them the 374456 (memory may be a little off on the piston #) number, it was recommended for engines with a 8060 or 8574 head and the other number for engines with the 400 gas head. They were differently shaped. Since the 400 engine used two different connecting rods and piston pin sizes it may affect what piston set you use. If you have small pin rods the big pin pistons won't fit. If its the big pin rod, adapter pin bushings can be used to change the size. Probably can get more power from a specialty aftermarket piston with those heads. Depends on what grade of gas you want to run. You didn't say what suffix was on the 8060 head. [Reply]  [No Email]

Put a used head gasket on the block, turn the head over and put oil based modeling clay on the edges of the combustion chamber, but wthin the area of the gasket. Set the head in place and put the head bolts in but leave them 1/8 inch loose. Turn the fan by hand, or crank, or raise one wheel and put it in fifth. This allows the engine to be turnd carefully through one revolution. If the piton raises the head, stop. if not they will deform the clay such that you will be able to see the clearance where the head comes close to the popup. Usually .060", to.080" is plenty.
