Changing oil in Farmall A

Hello I have a 1945 Farmall A that needs the oil changed. How many quarts? What weight? Need Napa part number for filter. Should I drop the pan clean it? Oh should have told you I have had this tractor awhile been setting in driveway. Anything. Else I need just let me know. thanks

Hello!
It takes 5 qts. You can run straight 30wt or a 10/30 or 10/40.
Napa should be able to look up the filter for you.
I sure other will chime in and help too.

Steve;

If you don't use the o-ring gasket I guarantee you will have a leak. Just make sure the old one is dug out.

Sometimes Napa screws up and gives out the filter for a super A. The filter for a regular A is about 9-10" tall. The super A filter is short.

The Napa filter number is 1172 for the cartridge filter and 1051 for the spin on filter for the c113 cid engine. Hal

There is of course the debate about using non-detergent vs detergent oil. Actually theres not that much debate, detergent oil is MUCH better but it will break loose pieces of crud in your engine, thats the detergent properties at work.
Assuming you go to detergent oil (and practically any oil will work, use at least 30wt, 10w30 as been said is fine) plan on changing it again in a relatively short time, say four or five hours of runtime. Then the next change can be a little longer, etc.

I"ve been using Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40 in our Super M for a couple years now. Its diesel rated so high detergent, I did short changes like outlined above. Also because its thick I let the engine idle a little longer before I put much load on it and even then the first load is just to ride around for a couple minutes, get everything good and warm before working it.

The A used 2 different filters. The taller one was used until 1944. The later from '44 on was identical to the Super A filter.
