I have a early '39 H, tranny makes a knocking sound in all gears, I bought a '44 for parts but it has X6 low speed gears and is to good to part out so i will fix it. Purchased a '47 parts tractor started cleaning it up this evening to tear it down and after further cleaning see that the serial number ends with X1A, also low low gears? Can I change out parts between the tractors as long as I use all of the gears? Are gears, shafts and bearings interchangeable on any year H? Any thoughts on what is causing the knocking sound? Thanks, Mike |

| The other thing is that if your 39 still has the early PTO you may have to change it to the late PTO when putting in a countershaft from a later tractor. Zach |

| If all gears includes 5th, the drive coupling in front of the trans, (not in it) could be coming apart. It has the look of a U joint, but when bad makes noise. I think you could see it through the inspection plate just behind the Belly pump. If 5th is knock free, it could be a chipped tooth (or broken) on the constant mesh gear, or a bad front input bearing. Look at the coupling first. As far as I know the gears will interchange as a whole set. Jim |
