Free Play?

where do I measure from to get the correct free play on the clutch of my M? is it from the the transmission plate to the pedal? There are 2 measurements, one is 7/8" and the other is 1 3/8" i think (im not in front of the book right now) but im a visual guy and doing this from a manuel is difficult for me since ive never done it. I know people have already helped on this but im getting real frustrated and I cant afford to ruin this clutch. if anyone can give it to me in dumbed down terms id appreciate it. ~Anthony

It is the 7/8th from pedal to platform. Just realize the actual measurement is not all that critical. What you are after is movement of the throwout bearing. It has to be clear of the clutch fingers when pedal is back against platform. Sometimes, linkages are worn and one has to compensate here and there . You want bearing to be away from fingers about 1/16th to 1/8th inch and still get full clutch release when you push pedal all the way to the stop. As the clutch linings wear that clearance decreases so you keep an eye one it as you are using it to make sure you always have some free travel.

Anthony - 1-1/4" measured at the pedal has always worked for me.

Keep in mind pedal free play is not real critical so long as: 1) The throwout bearing retracts free of (does not touch) the clutch fingers when the clutch is engaged AND, 2) When depressed, the clutch disengages fully (tranny input shaft stops turning) an inch or two before the pedal "hits bottom".

Bob, when you say 1 1/4" measured at the pedal, do you mean from the transmission deck to the pedal?

Straight out from the top of the deck to the back surface of the pedal arm.

From the point that the pedal touches the platform when the pedal is not pushed, to that same point when the pedal is pushed by modest hand force to feel the T/O bearing begin to move the fingers on the PP.. 7/8" to 1.25" will be fine. Jim

Operators manual says the minimum is 7/8 inch, meaning it should be adjusted at that point. Recommendation is 1 1/8 inch. The Super M is 1 1/8-1 3/8. The difference is because of the Rockford clutch on the SM? If the M has a Rockford clutch does it meet SM specs?

Nope - it's 1-1/4" movement measured AT the pedal!

I use a small square. Set one leg of the square flat on the tranny deck deck then slide it forward until the vertical leg touches the pedal. While holding the square stationary now push the pedal until you feel the T.O. bearing make contact. If the clutch is set right the pedal there will now be 1-1/4" between pedal and the vertical leg of the square.

and when it gets to be only 7/8 inch it's time to re-adjust back out to 1 1/4 inches.
