I have a 560 gas that is driving me nuts. This tractor will not start all the time. Its very erratic and sometimes I will shut it off and come back to it 20 minutes later and it won't start. I rewired it last spring and installed a pertronix kit with a new coil and it ran great all summer. Any idea as to what it could be? I can't seem to pinpoint why it sometimes doesn't start. |

| Sounds like the coil is going bad, try a replacement for "testing" purposes.
If the new coil makes no difference check the voltage at the battery first, then the coil while cranking the engine ( coil wire removed) could be the starter is pulling too many amps and not enough left over to supply the coil.
Bad ground at the battery, frame, starter or cable ends corroded will also cause this problem.
The little "solenoid" on top of the starter may need a good ground contact ( bolts that hold it to the starter) or possibly replaced.
Just guessing here, but these are some of the problems I have found that drove me nuts. |

| Diagnostic First step. Does it have spark when not starting. Check voltage at the coil input when it won't start. (leave the key on) if voltage, check for coil spark to block. Spark good go to fuel. Gas on fuel in carb? No crank is a different issue, we need to know what it is not doing. Jim |

| Throw the fancy ing. away and go back to the points . Just about each and every one that i put in years back failed including the one i installed in our one pulling tractor . Really look bad when ya are the one setting in the seat in front of all your customers making a bonzi run for the gate at twice the speed of the best out there and have it fail and have the sled hit you so hard that it shoves ya fifteen more feet . Yea i won the class but that was not the statement that i was tryen to make on that pull. Had to get drug back to the pit and i swapped out that piece of junk for old fashioned Points and cond. and let my buddy make the statement of the true meaning of out the gate and half way around the 1/2 mile track then shut it down . OLD fashioned points can be filed rest set with a match book and get you home , not with this high tech junk. where she dies is where she sets . |

| First, if it's a no start check and make sure you have spark. Needs to be bright blue and jump 1/8-1/4 inch. The further the better. If no spark trouble shoot the ignition system. First is to make sure the switch is good. Turn it on and check voltage to the coil. Turn off and on and repeat test each time 4-5 times. Next check to see if you have pulsing voltage to the distributer side of the coil while it's being cranked. If not you may have a wire that is sometimes grounding going into the dizzy or there is a problem with the IE.
If you do have spark check for fuel to the carb. Don't know on the 560 but a lot of old good carbs have a drian plug in the bottom od the bowl. Pull the plug with a clean coffee can under it. Should have a steady stream of gas running out, keep it running like that for a minute or 2. That allows the what gas is in the bowl to drain. If it turns into a dribble then you have a blockage to the carb. If it flows good then the problem is in the carb.
