The motor only has the crankshaft in it now, and I was wondering if the crankshaft roller bearings need replacing or not. When rolled over, the bearings do make some noise(a hum or a light growl) , but I don't beleive it is a bad noise and the balls in the bearings aren't pitted or cracked. Should I replace them with a good used set or leave them in and start the rebuild? My other question is about the reuse of the rod cap bearings. I understand that these can have wear, but when I re-install them I need to remove or add shims according to the plastigauge measurement. Am I right? Any help would be appreciated. I'm restoring this F-20 for my 4-H club. |

| Rod cap bearings. Use a magic marker or blue die and coat the bearing surface. Install them with enough shims removed that they are making contact with the crank journal. Rotate the crank enough for the contact areas to appear in the rod cap. Now you scrap material away from the contacted area and repeat the process until you have a bearing contact area that is close to being about 75% of the total bearing surface. Being a machinist, I made a shaft to fit the bearings onto before putting them in the enigine. I have only done this to one tractor and I still have not got it assembled enough to get it running. Check the archives for more info. SDE |

| when checking those brgs. , have you cleaned them good then oil them lightly then roll them over? any noticeable noise and replace them , but they may still out last you as they only run around 1000 rpm. yes, you can reuse rod brgs. check and adjust with plastigage but stay on the maximum clearance end as they are already worn egg shaped.i check with plastige in three positions on crank. |

| | If the rod cap bearings don't show signs of uneven wear, use them. I use plasti-gauge at 0.005 inches. Be sure to remove the plasti-gauge and oil them (I us automatic transmission fluid from Walmart) when you put them on the final time. Others may want them tighter but you will probably not be plowing with it so don't worry. |

| I second what Old-F20 said, replace the main bearings with new. Don't pay $200 each for new old stock, look on ebay, I bought new bearings for my Farmall Regular for around $30 each off of ebay.
A quick lesson on the bearing numbers:
The original numbers are 1313 for the front and 1315 for the rear. These are the max-fill heavy-duty bearings with more balls than standard bearings. However, there is no reason why you cannot use the standard-duty bearing as the tractor will not be doing heavy field work all day every day like when it was new. The numbers for standard duty bearings are 6313 for the front and 6315 for the rear. |

| if it's tore down that far do yourself a favor and replace them. growly bearings only get worse, they will never heal themselves |
