steering shaft end play

could someone please explain steering shaft end play? with the castle nut on and tight is it the play of the shaft in and out or is it as you turn the wheel left and right-slop before the wheels actually start to turn?

Assuming the bearing in the worm is good, and tight in the housing: Three issues, the sector gear to worm can wear allowing real gear lash. It is not adjustable on this tractor, and is repaired with new, or good used gear/s. The second is possible wear or hogging out of the sector to shaft key, the third is the attachment of the steering arm to the shaft. if it is loose or wallowed out the same steering play can happen. You have to start at the tie rods then the out-put shaft then the inside of the sector itself bad bushings,a bearing and the key on the gear there is also a bearing in the sector along with the bushings so there is several places it can be and a little here and there adds up sometimes.

Check the two stop rings at the yoke in front of the steering wheel they should both be snug up to the pedestal, and have two tight hex screws in them.
