I have had this SH for 8 years. This summer i noticed the shimmy has got real bad when in 5th gear doing road travel. I checked the Archives and saw that I needed to put a spacer under the Half moongear in the steering box. I put a 1 1/8" washer there. That took up the vertical play in the shaft. Now I read about a beer can shim to install where does that actually go? I tried it out this evening and it seems 90% better. I can not see wear in the gears.
IS there a shim that goes on the end shaft at bearing before I install the end Plug?
 
No. that bearing needs to be stationary where it is. Moving it in or out might help a little for a little while. (as will the shim under the gear) these tactics move the point of contact to unworn places on the gear and worm. They don't usually last very long because the wear pattern is now concentrated on a much smaller slice of steel. If all play is taken out of the U joints, the replacement of the gear, the replacement of the bolster shaft bushings, and thrust bearing, and resurfacing of the shaft are the real deal answer. If it works for a while, all is good. Jim
 
The ball bearing at the end of the worm is worn out. Ball bearings are not well suited for axial thrust loads, even less so when they're being hammered upon during 5th gear shimmy. What's happening is the worm shaft and the inner race are moving fore and aft, while the outer race remains stationary. No shims of any kind are used. Only the shaft and bearing assem., and the cap. Assuming everything else is tight, change the bearing and your troubles are over.
 
There is an article in the Sept Oct issue of Red Power magazine about this very problem and a cheap way to fix it,even has pics.Its a great magazine for IH guys.Eric
 
I might have been the source of taht idea, shims and spacers to move the worm gear.. Mine worked for a few months, then got the bad wobble again. I have come to beileve these short cuts dont work. I bought a new worm gear and shaft from this site, it steers tight and works great. I wouldnnn"t try the short cuts, just bite the bullet and spend the money.
