The PTO on My Farmall Super A is making a loud clanking noise when it is engaged. Bearings? If so, is it a big job to replace them?

It is not a bad job. Are you sure it is the PTO, and not the joints and shaft?

This is with the PTO not connected to anything. A local "expert" suggested that a tooth might be missing from one of the gears. I'll pull the belt pulley shaft and take a look inside.

Well, pulled the PTO upper housing and found both bevel gears for the pulley shaft chewed to hell. I'm not interested in rebuilding the pulley shaft.
I can't get the pulley shaft and gear out of the case. How to do that? Also, is the bevel gear on the end of the transmission shaft just pulled off with a gear puller (after removing the end bolt)?
Help, please....
