Going to convert from genator to alternator. How do I go about this? First time posting and messing with this kinda stuff. Thanks

Several articles on converting. Look up John T's conversion articles in the forum. Welcome to the forum. Sorry for no replies so far. Been in the field--as many others have.

Hi Logan, the 424 gas should have a C-146 engine.
The first requirement is to determine if the 424 is +ve or -ve ground. According to external_link the 424 was first produced in 1962, so could be either +ve or -ve ground system. If it is +ve ground most alternators are made for -ve ground and generators could be polarized in either direction but most older tractors were +ve ground. You can reverse the leads on the battery but may have to buy new cable ends as the +ve post on a battery is larger than negative. Also since it is a gas you will have to reverse the leads on the coil, also if there is an amp meter and gas gauge.

There is a thread at http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=farmall&th=886276 for a 2444 tractor which is very similar to the 424.

Bob M and John T on this site are the experts.
