Timing check on Farmall A

I want to check the timing on my A. I&T manual says there should be a marking on the flywheel that can be seen through the hand hole in the bell housing. I can't find any markings on mine.Am I looking in the wrong place?

It is there, just hard to see. You may have to clean the flywheel to find it. It will be in line with a pressure plate bolt.

You can look and find the faint mark, but if the tractor it is already running fairly well, just fine tune time it by ear. That works much better than trying to use a timing light on a old Farmall.

If you have a mag there is no timing as it fires on TDC when starting then goes 30 some advance and cannot be changed. If you have a dist you will need to find those marks on the flywheel and they are hard to find. Take out #1 plug when on compression and by removing the dist cap you will see the rotor pointing to #1 wire going to the plug. With a good lite you then can lookinto the hole and see the piston at the top. Now crawl under neath and use something to clean the flywheel and the mark will be there . Its a fine line in the flywheel and very hard to see unless you have had some experience. I paint that line whenever i have one apart so i can find it easy.
