I am restoring an1942 Farmall H, and when I got to the thermostat it did not have one, but it did have an insert with 3 tabs. My question is, do I remove this?

I would put in a thermostat if I were you. My H did not have one and when I put in a new head gasket I also added the thermostat. It makes it warm up much faster, which is supposed to be better for the engine and more fuel efficient from what I have been told.

I think you found what is left of the thermostat. You do need one and be sure to get the correct style as people will try to sell you anything that fits. Correct one is tube type, available at caseih.
