as it says i just started having issues with my power steering.it stopped working but when i engage the remote lever (up) i get steering back.i've read through all the old posts regarding this but i'm lost.inexperienced in working on tractors.i've done nothing but look at it and scratch my head any help would be greatly appreciated.lots of firewood to haul.thanks

In the hydraulic system there is a priority valve (diverter) that supplies the steering with first chance at pressure to assure safety. This device has small spool control valves in it, and springs. These can break, or dirt can jam them and prevent proper diversion of oil pressure to the steering. The "dead heading" of a different control when it is not connected raises pressure and forces the steering to work. A manual, and either pretty strong mechanical/hydraulic experience or professional help are needed. Jim

thx for the speedy reply.a manual is on order.i just ran it aound the hill up and down on angles back and forth and steering came back.do you still believe it's one of the valves you mentioned?when sitting on the tractor under the left side there is i'd say a 9 inch cylinder,is this the hyd filter?if i remove that will i lose all my fluid, most or like a gallon?

Hi PALogging, yes that is hydraulic filter.

Does your parking brake work?
Check hydraulic fluid level, dip stick at left heel with engine running about 1100 RPM.

See following post for 784 same as your 674:

hi Jim,no parking brake,no left brake.right brake works ok but only after i pump it about 5 times.3 point and pto work as well.checked that link thx. now i read here somewhere that i could lose everything after changing/cleaning that filter.whats the story with that?

Hi, I never had a problem after hydraulic filter change but you are correct others have had problems with loosing hydraulic pump prime. Be sure to clean mesh filter as it is probably clogged with parking brake material and be careful when you take the filter off to re-assemble parts in proper order. If you loose prime the first thing I would try is drive tractor on slope with the filter side down, lift out hydraulic dip stick and work hydraulic levers and PS back and forth.

Re Brakes, they require bleeding, you can search archives and find procedure. There is like a grease zerk above each rear axle and that is brake bleed screw.
BTW, 674 has same rear end as 454,464,574,484,584,684,784,884, same as 495 thru 895 and newer 32XX series.

Years back, my 574 did about the same thing - The hydraulic fluid and filter have probably been neglected for years, the fluid probably smells burnt, mine did. Theres 10 gallons in there, you need to get it hot & change it. NAPA got me a hyd filter, Tractor Supply has good Hy-Tran equivalent oil. Underneath the belly of the tractor is a good size hex nut with the valve for the steering behind it. It needs to come out & get cleaned.

When you change the filter look carefully at the stuff that is on it. If it is mostly soft and brown then it is probably brake material. Use a magnet on it
You may even find some metal grindings. You block it up good and work your way from the back wheel and axel housing into the brakes and replace them. takes time and the removal of lots of parts. Not that hard to do. Just be careful.

thx for all the replies guys,i appreciate your time and help.i kept getting steering back intermittently and had orders for 10 cords of wood so i kept going and didnt fix it yet.So i need to pull the filter and clean it and the mesh screen behind it. Under the filter is a large (approx 1 1/8) bolt with a long pretty heavy spring on top of it.Is that the valve i need to pull apart and clean? The oil does smell burnt but it looks very clean and fresh like it was just changed before i bought it.Thx for the tips on bleeding the hyd system after a filter change, that will help.I"ve been looking high and low for the brake bleed bolts to no avail. Not sure y i can"t find them.....frustrating.
