I am currently weighing my options for what cultivating tractor I will buy next year. I have more or less come to the conclusion that the 140 will be the best fit for my farm. We are a small farm producing our crops intensively on just over 2 acres. I worked on a farm years ago with 3 cultivating tractors (cub, super a and JD 900hc). The cub was used for single row crops while the 900hc was used with a basket weeder for 5 rows on our 60inch beds.
I really liked the basket weeder, for time saved on intensively grown crops such as carrots and salad mixes.
I have found little to no information on using the basket weeder on a 140.
Does anyone have experience with this setup?
If not, what is the slowest working ground speed I should expect while cultivating with a 140? Using the cub I felt like I was flying through the fields, which was fine for widely spaced rows with crops such as cabbage and beans. While using the 900hc I was crawling through the fields, but when I was watching the crops I felt like I was speeding along a 20mph.
Any perspective would be helpful.
Thanks
Brian

I have a basket weeder set up for my Super C. It works great as long as the plants are small enough to fit under the axle of the baskets. Once they get bigger than that the leaves can get caught and rip the plants out.

You might want a standard cultivator set up for your 140 to take over when the crops are a little bigger.

Hello I am working for a vegetable that the owner just got a basket weeder this spring...when he ordered the basket weeder from budding he told them he was putting it on a 140 so it was built for it...the 140,super A, 100 and 130 all have the same cultivator design used on these tractors so you could use this basket weeder on any of the above models.....as for speed of a super a vs a 140 I would have to find an owners manual or sales litature to check that out.....the rear tire size on all these tractors is 24 inches ...I have cultivated with the basket weeder on the 140 and I would say it works good in 1 st gear give me a call at 320-468-6474, Kevin

You may find the Super "A" to be better suited for your use,as some of my customers in the past claimed the "140" was a bit fast for cultivating, maybe due to the larger rear tire size used with a lot of "140s",also the "140" sheet metal is a bit larger over the Super "A",and cuts back a little visiblty wise. That said these IH's simply can't be beat for row crop cultivation, even today.IH offered a rotary hoe option for the "144" cultivator, but not that rolling basket you refer to.You may well have to adapt that unit to the cultivator,I've seen many such adaptations over the years. You are using a single row application, correct?
