My neighbor has a real nice 300 and it works great.........Untill it takes a fit. It has a 12v convertion and the alt. charges full all the time. It has 3 wires and I"m not sure if he has it wired right. He has no light and he doesn"t know if it has a diode. It was converted by the last guy who owned it. When it throws a fit he just changes everything he sees untill it runs again. He"s not the best mech. I have ever met!So my first question is why does it charge all the time? The battery is good,I checked that first. It starts charging as soon as you start the motor. He changed the alt. and the new alt does the same thing. So how do I get it to charge right? After that I"ll try to deal with other problems. I"m goin to bypass the ignition switch to see if that will keep it running. But I think I need to get the alt. calmed down first. Can anyone tell me what mistake in the wiring would make it charge all the time?

IF the tractor has a SI series Delco alternator, the link below gives a good wiring diagram that works with most gas engine tractors with distributor ignition.

The high charge rate on a SI series Delco can result if the Sense wire (marked #2 on the alt rear case) does not have a good connection to battery voltage. This wire is what tells the alternator what the electrical system voltage is so the alternator can adjust it's output to produce a constant 13.5 -14.5 volts.
If the #2 sense wire has a bad connection or is not connected to the battery / electrical system, that will cause the alternator to charge at maximum output all the time.

Jon, thank you. That is a good drawing. Still have a few questions. This tractor has an ignition switch like my pick-up.Start on the switch. Is that the right kind of switch? How does that change the drawing if it's the wrong switch? Should I change the switch if it is the wrong kind of switch?

That is the stock type of switch. The original had a cover that flipped down over the keyhole. If it has a magneto it will be an H4 and you can find a picture of one of them online to see if that is it. I believe there is more than one type of distributor it could have. I just rewired my 300 with a 3 wire alt 12v conversion.

Thanks Zach, I think it is an IH dist. I don't know anything about magnito's so I better look them up. Thanks again.

Does it matter if the tractor had a magnito? How can I tell if it did,if it matters?

Having a magneto really does not change much with the alternator wiring.
with a magneto, you still need a switch to turn on / off 12V power to the Alternator #1 excite wire. This wire should have a gen light, (can be hidden, taped up in the harness) inline between the switch and alternator.
If not already done, buy an alternator harness repair plug ( mid to late 70's Chevy) and install it on the regulator blades in the alternator. This plug will make your alternator conversion much more professional looking and make the connections safe from shorting to the alternator case.
The one shown in the link is overpriced, should cost about $3 at your local auto parts store.
