I have a Charlyn power steering set up on my Super MD (driven by an Eaton pump). Anyway the power steering works fairly well for being a diesel, wide front and a loader, but i have play in the torque motor. It is not at the point where it is not usable but going down the road in 5th is no longer safe. Is there a way to adjust "play" in them or a rebuild kit to correct this?

thanks

Andrew

looking at the parts diagram for the torque generator, the thru shaft is actually 4 pieces. #369 is the control spool asem which is on the control end (faces the rear of the tractor), then # 147 control rod end drive, then # 148 power end drive, then # 142 shaft asem, power end, which faces the front of the tractor. # 147 and #148 have gears cut in them, so that is prolly where the play is coming from. eaton should still have parts available, as the torque generators are still being made. if you need the manuals, shoot me an email and i can send them to you, i have them on pdf format on my puter.

This same basic torquemotor is still built by CharLynn. I would contact a hydraulic repair shop in your area that repairs Eaton equipment and see if they either have the parts or can still get them. Here in SC Kansas, I would contact B&B Hydraulics... actually a few old Cessna/Eaton hands work there and might have access to parts. Charlynns are built at Eaton's Shawnee, OK plant.

I doubt if it is the power steering -- more likely in the manual part of the steering itself, anything from the ujoints to the gears in the top of the bolster to bushings in the bolster to bearings. Do a Google search for Charlyn power steering and you will find the Eaton web site -- there are a few parts still available, but probably not the ones you need if it is indeed the steering.

It is the torque motor trust me. Searching the archives brings up nothing as well.

Ooohhhh, this is a good question, I have the same problem with the Char-lyn unit on my '47 Minnie-Mo UTU. Any help sincerely appreciated.
