450 tach cable

Rewiring my FIL's 450. Noticed that the tach cable was severed, and I want to replace it. In the picture below, I can't seem to extract the old cable at #1. I'm not sure of the purpose of the cover at #2, as the threads seem to be part of the larger casting. Must I take it apart at #3?
Hope somebody has a good word.

If the cable won't pull out you have a problem. Just slides in. Housing # 2 holds the drive gear for the tach cable. The two round head screws and retaining plate hold the tach drive housing in. Looks like you have the late type so there's no adjustment needed when putting back in if removed. If lucky the tach cable drive gear is not striped. Wouldn't bet on it though.

Thanks.

If I take the two screws out and the retaining plate off, that threaded part will be removable from the larger housing?

If so, will I be able to see that drive gear?

Again, thanks. If I can ask one more...

I took off that retaining plate and pulled out the driven-gear into which the cable inserts. (I wasn't pulling hard enough on the cable, and I did get it loose from its gear once out.

I can't see the driving gear- too much wet grease in there, but I put my finger in, and if I was a betting-man, I'd agree that the driving-gear has a problem.

This is my FIL's 450, and I'm replacing the wiring harness. I saw the broken tach cable when I took off the instrument panel and it's hood. If I were to ask him, he'd say not to bother, but while I have it off, it'd be my preference to fix it (just me, I guess), but I don't want to get into a jackpot. If I separate the housing at #3 in my picture, will I be able to replace the driving-gear without special-equipment or getting myself into furthur problems? Or would I have to go deeper than that?

Nope, the tach"s not seized. I can easily spin the tach-end of the severed cable, and the tach responds.

Any thoughts about swapping out the driving gear?

If the teeth are good on the gear you pulled out you are probably good to go. If the teeth on the inside gear get to bad the distributor quits turning.

Shine a good light in there, wipe out excess grease to see the teeth realy clearly. That gear is not usually at fault. There should be a threaded collar on the #1 position of the pic that holds the cable in the drivven gear. It may be off the broken end, or just not shown in the pic. Jim
