D282 Block Identification

I am looking for a late d282 block out of a 656, but the salvage yards only have items listed with casting numbers. Does anyone have a way of looking to see what these two casting numbers came from?

(quoted from post at 15:05:28 08/23/12) The first no is 560 660 656 706 s/n 71778 or earlier.Other is 656 706 71779 or later.

Not that it will make any difference but the serial number break is actually one block earlier. 71777 is the last of the early blocks. 71778 is the first of the later ones.

d282,

Do yourself a favor ,even if you get a late
block, convert it to the early style liners
( flange type) they are a much better system.
Changing is not difficult --hone .001 from bore
of block , cut counterbores .

IH was so sure that the late liners were
going to slip down in the bore that they said
that the .045 height was alright if it slipped
down to .018 above deck . Not a reasuring
thought. I made the tool to install the late
liners to .045 , used once . For the last 20
years I have converted all of those to the
early liners.
