I am writing a follow-up from a while back: I have obtained a complete pto from a 1086 that was parted out. I erroneously reported previously that it was from a 986. Several helpful replies, all to the effect that it was possible to swap in the 540/1000 pto to replace my 1000 rpm pto in my 1586. But it was pointed out to me that it was not a direct bolt-in, that I might have to make an adaptor, that I guess the input shaft was larger on the 1586. Any ideas on what to prepare for? We have a good machine shop, I just haven't taken the pto out of my 1586 yet. Thanks.

Look at the front end of the PTO unit. If the pump assemblies are the same they can be swapped to give you the correct shaft for your tractor.

If you are swapping out similar style PTOs you can just use the 1586 PTO unit input shaft in the two speed unit. Other wise there is also a connecting shaft that has different size splines on each end. I don't remember now which tractors they were, hopefully someone else here can tell you. I think it was either one of the 2+2s or one of the 50 series.

Thanks for the reply. They are similar in that they appear to have the same bolt-patterns, but the 1586 only has 1000 rpm, and the 1086 has the two shafts. What I want is the option of using 540 rpm as well as the 1000. Would swapping in the two-shaft unit require that I obtain something from another tractor than a 1586 or 1086?
