How do you line up the splines of the clutch with the splines of the transmission shaft (not sure if its called that)? Do you have to go up through the belly pump hole? Any tricks and advice for putting the motor back in my M would be appreciated...

thanks guys, anthony

Did you run the three bolts into the pressure plate to tighten it? That will let you align it better.

On a 706 I made a line up shaft put clutch on and tigthen up pulled it as clutch was centered then moved engine as we had motor on stands with wheels got spline started and then used all thread to help line motor and rearend and brought it together. on 656 clutch and shaft were smaller sowe used a long socket with duct tape to make it tighter went to gether like other one. this was on a tryclce tractor so we were worried about rolling around took some angle iron and bolted to front end. job donewithout any hurts

I have one of those stubby spline shaft for centering the clutch disc on the flywheel. I'm not sure if it would fit a Farmall M's clutch disc. Hal

If you lined the clutch plate up on the flywheel. Extra clutch shaft from a salvage tractor works good. Put the transmission in neutral the PTO in gear and turn the PTO shaft when the engine gets to the splines.
Dowel pin on each side of the bell housing helps keep the engine straight. Some clutch housings have a casting lip on the inside bottom part that the ring gear will catch on with dowels used though. If a problem I grind the housing enough to clear.

dont know what setup you have to do it but, i have the engine hanging on an overhead hoist and just line up the clutch splines to the trans shaft by eyeballing it.make sure you have the clutch disc centred with a pilot shaft first though. push the engine back and watch how its going. then you can raise or lower the engine as required, or rock it a bit. or even rotate the engine slightly to get slines started. before starting to mate them you can even put a spline at 12 oclock on clutch, and then put mating spline on trans shaft at 12 oclock. once you know their started can install bell housing bolts and snug evenly all around.

My experience has been the same. I just arrange for a spline to be straight up on the shaft, and a "hole" or "anti-spline" to be straight up on whatever the shaft slides into. I've never had a problem -- so far. :-)

yep , thats right. i dont know what all this talk is about bolts in the pressure plate, or leaving pressure plate bolts loose. i use a pilot shaft and have everything lined up before installation and it works good. and lots of time even if the p.p. bolts are loose the clutch disc is still not moveable to centre it.

Put the pins back in if removed, pit the clutch disk and PP together, but leave it as loose as 4 or 4 threads in the 6 bolts so it just dangles there. Then the clutch shaft will stab back in wit little jiggling and the pilot bearing will align the clutch like a clutch tool. If it sems to be hung up, start again. Turn the FW with a big screw driver to help. Measure things to keep them square. Jim
