On the underside of my '51 M, directly below the belt drive, is a plate about 4" wide that has two felt gaskets/filters attached to it. I would like to replace these gasket/filters, but I am not sure of their name. Can anyone help me out?

I've been looking for the same parts for my H with no luck. I think we are going to have to make them.

I talked to a guy at my local IH dealer who works on older tractors. He told me to go to the hardware store and get some weather stripping and cut it to fit. I did and it seems to work well. He also said nothing is really necessary there, but I feel better having it in. I got weather stripping that looks like tightly packed wool, but I am not sure what it is. No plastic backing to it. Good luck.

Your dealer is right. It is not necessary, but it WILL keep dust and dirt from accumulating inside. I think I made those pieces for my M from some 8n Ford brake dust seal. Basically a length of felt.

Rear cover plate felt strips. Front part # 15178EA and rear 15179EA. Don't know if you can still get them. May need to make out of felt material.

You were right on the mark with the gaskets. When the IH parts guys first heard the part numbers you gave me he said, "Well, those aren't IH parts numbers", but then he soon added, "Well what do you know, there they are and for a '51 M too."

But unfortunately they were no longer available. I got some weather stripping at the hardware store, 1" wide, and trimmed it to fit. Seems to have worked out well. Thank you very much for your help.
