A friend has a McCormick planter that we do not know if it is a 449 or a 449A, any way to tell? It has the steel seed boxes and the fiberglass square fertilizer boxes with single disk fertilizer openers that are shot as well as the star fertilizer feed wheel.the disk openers look to have been about 10". It has the double disk seed openers that look to have been 12". And the bearing is falling apart in one. Does anybody know witch planter this is and would you have a parts book you could scan the pages for me. That way I could get some part numbers to try to find the parts for him. He is Amish so has no electricity, phone or computor. He did not get a book for it when he bought it this spring and I was going to try to find one at the show-swap meat thursday but he was set up but not open. Anybody know of a parts planter that would have these parts or of any complete planters with the clutch lift within hauling distance of Monroe, Indiana as anouther friend wants one.

AS he is Amish NO PICTURES, they do not use camaras. And if I had one all that could do is tell someone if the planter their neighbor has setting out in the weeds might be one. The difference between the 449 and the 449A, is it the fiberglass hoppers? The disk seed openers, the disk fertilizer openers? Did they all have disk openers or did some have shoe openers? Is it something else? Do not know what parts book to try to get. Might get to see the manual salesman on labor day. Deere planters of that age I know but not IHC.

The CaseIH parts website lists the 449A. That may give you a start. I just picked up another box of late '50s early '60s manuals & will look through those tonight or tomorrow & let you know if I scored one for either planter.

Is there 1 fert. hopper per row or does oooone hopper feed 2 rows? Is the hitch a single souare/rectangle tubing or is it stamped sheet metal/2 pieces bolted togather in a v-shape? Is it hyd.lift with the cylinder on the right side of the tube hitch and parelle to the hitch tube? Search for 449 or 449A pitchures on this site and see if you can find a picture to show us. Is the planter in his possesion and will he let you take a picture of it? Can you get a part number from the gear box or the frame and a illustration of the frame? You say you are familar with John Deere planters. Does it look more like a 490 deere or a 495 deere planter of that time? Armand

Each row has it's own box. And it is clutch lift, no hydrolick and he has it 50+ mile from where I live so I cannot go out to look. I know it is not a 56 or 58 or newer planter, just what is the difference between a 449 or the model with a A for 449A. The Deere was a 494 or 494A and differences were in toung and frame where fertilizer mounted plus size of boxes. That type of information is what I am looking for. Lookinh on the net I find books for both a 449 and a 449A but do not know the one to buy as for what the differences are.

No, sorry, the only planter manual is one for the 220-230-240 planters. When I head into the dealership, tomorrow or Tuesday, I'll talk to the old shop head & seee if he recalls what the difference is.
