I want to see what your thoughts would be about putting a cummins motor in a 560 diesel

I got a 706 pump on it now so if I go though the head and have it ported and polished would that help

Porting and polishing will help it floe air better, faster, and smoother. It probably wouldn't help at all with starting. Taking it in and having the valves ground and milling it will sure make a difference (if that is your problem) In my brief experience there are a lot of tractors out there that need the valves adjusted or even ground. The head work shouldn't be too much. Maybe $300 if you don't need a bunch of new valves.

With a good compression tester you should be able to determine if your low compression is being caused by your rings or your valves.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see I'm guessing. The pump is weak or maybe low.

Compression is the problem. It could be injectors. I don't want to steer you the wrong way and waste your money. You can pull your pump and get it bench checked at a diesel shop for a start.

The adapter plate for the 06 and 56 series "large frame" tractors also fits the 560, so you could hang a 3.9L (4BT) or 5.9L (6BT?) in the tractor pretty easy. Like the other guys said, it ain't cheap, though.

The 3.9L would give you about "stock" horsepower, and wouldn't be too heavy. Only thing is, the engine is not a lugger. Dad's got a 5220 Maxxum on the farm with the 3.9L and ya gotta keep 'er wound up over 1500 RPM or it falls flat on its face. That's my only complaint about that tractor.

Unfortunately a 560 won't sound right with a 3.9L.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see Get your injecter pump rebuilt. Did that to my 460 years ago and it starts right up and everyone knows a 560 starts better than a 460. Hope this helps.

If it has all new glowplugs and batteries maybe it is your valves causingthe hard starting? M&W made a turbo kit for the 560, if you can find one and wanted more power.

Are you planning to put a 5.7 in it? One thing you will gain is it will start a LOT easier. It would be a peppy tractor and fun to drive but I wouldn't take it to the field and pull five bottoms with it.

Neighbor had a 560 diesel that was turboed and putting out 107 horses on the dyno. It was set up that way when he bought it. Fun to drive and they never had trouble with it, but the keyways in the axles were chipped from the extra torque.
It must have had the rear end updates. Jim

It will fit but you have to buy an adapter plate and they arent cheap. I have been looking at a cummings for a 544 the motor isnt to expensive but its about 2 grand for the plate and then there is the rad and maybe the fuel tank and so on. Its much cheaper to stick with the IH engine. Well thats what i found out so far. Erik..

What's the purpose? Remember the 560 was the tractor IH put into production delivered to the public and then found out the rear ends weren't up to snuff. They came out with an upgrade kit but putting more power to one would make me nervous. If you're looking to repower at the same power it might be okay but put some long range glasses on- Even if you have the tractor and an engine unless you have access to a machine shop it'll probably cost you just as much to adapt a Cummins as it would to put an IH motor back in it and when you're done what will it be worth? Basically anything can be made to fit, how much money do you have and what purpose will it serve when you are done?

What model of Cummins are you referring to ?

NT855, NTH, NTC, Big cam, Big cam IV, L10, M11, N14, Triple Nickel,K model, or something along the lines of a modern 4BT, 6BT, 6CT, IBX, ISX??

You can make just about anything fit with an adapter and flex plate, just have to be conscious of how much torque & vibration you would be putting through the 60 year old tranny, rear end, and final drives. I would also consider how much (if any) extra weight that it will place on the front end. Just consider the longevity of the modification, and the purpose you will be using the tractor for, just shows or working it.

This day & age, anything is possible, just depends on how far you want to take it.
