I have some fast hitch implements I want to paint, including a C-20 Moldboard Plow and a C-200 Disk Plow. I have looked at the Paint Committee decisions so I have some ideas.

Were the actual plow/discs painted when they left the factory? Mine mostly sit as ornaments, so any suggestions as what to paint the plow/disc part?

Thanks in advance

Yes, it is an oil based graphite coating. Long after conventional paint would be dry, you can rub this stuff and get graphite on your finger. I never used it before, have no idea how it will hold up to weather or how it will act when you put the plow in the ground. I know that things like the spray wax for tools only hold up for a year or so. I hope this does better.Things like oil and gun grease only hold for so long too, how long depends on how thick you get it on.

What are you talking about plow-coat? we always had a bucket of old gun grease around to paint the plow lays with a paint brush or rag wired on a stick. That was the kid's job. Sometimes the cows would lick it off then we got to do it again. Probably not something you would do for show.

When your plows were built, IH probably coated the moldboards and disks with a colored varnish. The manuals said to remove it before plowing. I just finished restoring a plow and used EZ-Slide (by VanSickle) that I got at Tractor Supply. I assume it and Plow Coat are similar. From here, it was the nearest source for that sort of product. I may want to try plowing with it so didn't want to paint it. It should be easy to put more on if it needs it later on.

I think the EZ-Slide is more of a graphite slip coat. The plow coat is a very soft easily removed paint...surface protectant.

Harvester before it started using plow coat sometime in the early sixties, varished their soil contact surfaces after grinding. We purchased a c35 plow with rex bottoms 1961, it was varnished. What fun it was to get it scoured up!

That's what I was thinking, probably clear varnish. They'd have to be coated with something to prevent rust. When we sold Kvernelands plows the moldboards and shares were painted. We used paint remover and a putty knife before we delivered them.

I never saw a "new" disc plow sold, but I know that a good farmer would coat any plow w/ plow coat after it was scoured from use, and before it was stored. Kept the share ready to scour quickly on the next use. All the plow coat I've ever seen was black. Not a real glossy black, but not flat black either. I'd use a semi gloss black to make it look like plow coat, and may even brush it on, as that was how plow coat was applied.
Of course, if you thimk you're going to use it, then by all means, use plow coat! Plow coat is much softer than paint and comes off much easier, so which you use would be dictated by your plans for the plow.
