504 pto Problems

Every time i use the pto for work i have to pull and hold the lever up to make it work. When i disengage the pawl from the quadrant and let the lever be, the pto does little to nothing. It seems to be slipping. Do i need to adjust the linkage? Or does the pto need new parts?

It should latch in the up position to engage and latch in the down position to set the PTO brake. In the middle it'll freewheel but it's not engaged.

You should have to push the button on the end to disengage it from either the up or down position.

Thanks. That makes sense, but there doesn't seem to be a notch for the lever to be in the engaged position. Parts book doesn't show one either.
