I currently have a 454 that I picked up last year for a great price. Did a little work to it and have used it some for mowing. It has worked well however it is a little rough looking. Local fellow was interested in buying it at a price that would net me a nice profit and there is a 684 with 3800 hours for sale pretty close to me. It is a late 84 series with the improved h pattern shifter. Has been painted and seems pretty decent.

My question is about the durability of the four cylinder diesel in the 684 vs the d179, fuel useage, cold starting, etc. The 454 starts and runs great and has just enough power to run my six foot bush hog. 684 would do the same job a little easier I suppose and the sheet metal, etc is very good. Tire condition is similar.

Is the 684 just as good, only bigger? Both tractors share the same rear end, park brake issues, etc and physical size difference isn't a concern to me.[/list]

D179 is 3cyl of same bore & stroke as D239, if the 684 is in great shape, go for it, it is newer than the 454 and aside from the Cat 1 / Cat 2 stuff and being slightly less nimble than a 454, 684 in general is a good tractor.

The 179 has three of the same cylinders that the
239 has four of. 684 has like the same engine with
one extra cylinder. If you like the 454, you'll
really like the 684. Four cyl smoother, quieter and
of course more power.

Hi, my brother has both 454 and older 684 with
same shifter as 454. I have used both for many
hours.
The D-239 is a harder to start engine in the
winter and will consume more fuel. The 684 may
have a T/A and the 3pt will be a cat II lower
links. You can buy insert to make it cat I or
change the pins on your 3pt implements. 454 is a
better tractor in tight spaces with shorter
turning radius.
Both engines are very reliable.
