1953 Super M compression test shows cyl1: 121psi, cyl2: 118psi, cyl3: 118psi, cyl4: 121psi. Book says 129psi is best. Bluish smoke and some minor blow by. Maybe rings? Could I get away with using 20w50 oil instead of the SAE30 that is in there? Would that help with compression and help to stop burning the oil? Or should I just do the rings/? |

| Compression is fine. You don't need to start thinking about doing anything to the engine internals until compression gets down around 75PSI.
I can speak from experience, going to "thicker" oil makes NO DIFFERENCE, period. Doesn't help oil pressure. Definitely doesn't do a thing for compression.
You might have some oil coming in through the valve guides.
Work the snot out of it if you can.
Another option is to get it warmed up and spray 1/2 of a can of Seafoam directly into the intake with an old Windex bottle as quickly as you can without killing the engine. Should clean it up. |

| what you are looking for with a compression test is consistency among cyls, and it don't get any more consistant than that. The valves have to be pretty good too or you would have more spread in the numbers. Put some clean oil in it and make it work, chances are the more and harder it works the rings will seat and it will clear up. If not , with those numbers I would think it has to be getting oil through the valve guides if its burning it. |

| Those kind of numbers-Leave it alone! The rings are probably just stuck/glazed from sitting,idleing/poopin' around. If it was not properly 'broken in' after the last OH,it will smoke.I dont think "thicker oil" will work.Work the snot out of it for a couple days or so(get the engine good and warm for a prolonged time).Try putting some 'Restore' in it,that sometimes helps.Another possibility is valve guides.Just my humble opinion,Steve |

| agree, it just needs to be taken out in the field and worked under load. first change the oil if its dirty or due and throw in i quart auto trans oil in it and put it to work. then next oil change 20-50 is fine. |
