A few more questions on my 49 M

Hi guys. A few more questions.

What is the plate mounted in front of the coil? Looks like some kind of shield. I've never seen that before. Is it necessary or useful. If not, I'm taking it off.

Also notice the fan shroud is rusted out at the bottom. Thinking about trying to repair it with some fiberglass. Not sure how that would work out. Anyone ever try this?

Also notice the terminals at the coil and distributor have been coated with some kind of gook, maybe silicone caulking by the previous owner. He didn't stop there. He also did the terminals for the battery cables, starter, on/off switch, etc. Anyone else do this? I guess it's OK, but I won't be doing it after I repaint it.

Either his water pump was leaking or he was driving
through high water. That's my guess. I'd buy a
better shroud. Let me know if I can help.
 
Easy to find a shroud in salvage yard. They aren't damaged very often. Shield is shade tree add on. Toss it, not needed.
I'd remvove and clean both ends of the battery cables.
 
If going to fix up and paint you may want to round up a M gas upper bolster and related parts. Fan shroud for a M is not realy the correct length for that bolster anyway. Look at the difference of the frame rail mounting holes in the two bolsters I picture. One with paint is a M gas bolster. Without paint is like the one on tractor. Notice the difference in bolt hole placement from the crankshaft side of the castings.

Thanks for the replies guys. Now I'm really confused. I assume then that I have some sort of a "parts" or "hybird" tractor, lol and not an original, right? Just when did the square front bolster first appear? I've read that the SMTA had a longer hood. Is that when they first appeared? I've also seen pictures of the 400 series tractors with them. So if the SMTA hood is longer then the M hood, just how much longer is it? Just curious.

D Slater--You say that I need to find an M bolster and other related parts. That of course would be another hood, and what else would I need to get? Would my current steering shaft still work? It does have a char-lynn power steerng unit attached that's not working. The pump that works off the crankshaft is missing it's belt.

One last question. Couldn't I just leave things as is, and proceed with the restoration? The correct police is the least of my worries.

I'm very ignorant about these things, but I'm slowly learning.

Well, I'm off to ebay, to see if any M bolsters are listed. TIA, Patrick
 
That bolster was used from 1954 to 58. When it was installed on a SMTA gas tractor the worm steering shaft was made longer. Fan housing changed. Upper radiator support rod longer. Rear steering shaft support changed. Cast lower coolant hose made different. Top coolant hose longer. Hood longer. Some hand crank parts different.
If satisfied with the hood looks and other things there's no reason to change. Power steering installation has already changed part of the original parts. Hood with piece added to make longer and a longer coolant hose probably handled the rest.
 
D. Slater sir, you're da man! Thank you very much. You've made things a lot more clear, and have eased my feable little mind. So I'm assuming then that an SMTA hood would fit OK. Also an SMTA shroud. Both of those items seem to be very scarce on ebay right now. So I may have to do with what I've got. I think the rusted shroud I have now is do-able with a little fiberglass. That seems to be my only option. Although the splice on the hood is noticable, I think I'll be able to spruce it up with some bondo and make it look a little better.

Evan though I won't have an accurate representation of a true 49er, I'll still be satisfied with it all pretty, red, and shiny when finished. The M is such an awesome beast! Yep, I'm leaving it as is. Going back to an original M front end seems to be a bit more than what I bargained for.
