valve adjustment

should I or do I need to do a valve adjustment since I took the head off and sent it to the machine shop? It ran great before the blown gasket and nothing has moved since I took the head off....thanks guys, ~Anthony

Absolutely! You want to check/reset valve lash for couple reasons:

- It will never be easier (you've already got the rocker box off).

- Valve clearance WILL change when you remove/replace the head since the new gasket is likely be slightly different thickness than the old one. Also if the machine shop "cleaned up" the head gasket surface it will change the valve lash when reinstalled.

thats a definite yes, never even heard of such a thing. even when retorquing a head valve adjust ment is standard procedure also. what are u working on?

also just by grinding the valves and seats the lash is decreased. if you installed new seats and valves this would increase the lash comparing to the old worn out seats and valves.

I found that when I replaced the head gasket on my H and did nothing to the head other than clean it up a bit that the valve action changed enough that there was no compression because the valves were not able to close all of the way. I was surprised that it made that much difference. By the way, are you the same BigTone who posts on the ADKForum? I saw that the name was the same and wondered about it.

Absolutely.

And once you're done with it you'll see it's such a simple procedure that you'll never have to think twice about doing it in the future.

If it takes more than 10 minutes you're over thinking it.

It's easy to check the clearances. Bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke and counting from the fan end of the engine set valves 1-2-3 & 5, then rotate engine 180 degrees and set valves 4-6-7 & 8. Set them cold at .020". Hal

yes
and like said, after re-torque and driving around some, check them again.

adjusting valves on a solid lifter engine is normal maintenance

Another thing, back off the adjustments before tightening down the rocker arm bracket, unless you like bent pushrods or broken rocker arm shafts due to stressed alignment. (ever wonder why so many engines bend a push rod right after head was off and back on).

Make that 360 degrees.

Not on a diesel with power steering.
