I got to thinking what you all said about the wiring and the battery cables/clamps...
...so I went up to my FIL's barn, took the clamps off the battery, took them apart and shined them up, scuffed the wires, and cleaned and shined up where the ground strap bolts to the frame, which was covered with oily crud, and she started right up! My FIL was pretty amazed.
But I took to heart what you guys said about the wiring. Called Brillman.com and ordered a new wiring harness, battery cables, a ballast resistor, and a new Delco alternator, which will eliminate the voltage regulator. They're good people, like you said, and we talked a bit about what we got, and he's sending a harness to fit the new alternator. Can't wait to get working on it.
But, you guys were right exactly dead-center on-the-money, and I wanted to say thanks for the quick and thorough help. We sure appreciated it.
And me... I live, and I learn.

When you had "nothing" trying to start the tractor, I knew that was the problem, but then I kept reading your saga and shaking my head... That's the most impressive parts shotgun story I've read in a long time.

How "bout it. 90% of that time, he was trying to work through it on his own while I was at work. I found out about all the parts after the fact. He was pretty stunned to see it was only the cable ends. I didn"t feel like it was my place to tell him I thought he was wasting his money, but in hindsight, I wish I had, even though I wasn"t fully sure myself on what was the problem. Hopefully, we both learned.

My dad worked on green tractors for some 28 years, could fix one over the phone during dinner on a Sunday. With starting problems the first thing he suggested was ground cable. Always try the easy things first. I try to do solder on connections intead of the clamp one you showed, they just work better. Glad you got it fixed, made points with inlaws too.
