Farmall 300 Hydraulic problem

I put a aftermarket 3 point on my 300. The hydraulics moan with a slight grind (sounds like a grind) if I move lever slow. Is this normal? Up down works well but doesn't sound right. Thanks in advance.

Where are the noises coming from? Front, rear, under the gas tank, out of the sky?

Other than the pump there are no moving parts that could make grinding noises. The pump wouldn't grind for long, and still continue to pump. If it's the pump gears grinding you wouldn't have any pressure. If it's the cam gears grinding, the tractor couldn't run for very long, if at all.

The noise is coming from under the gas tank. Like I said it sounds like grinding. Could be more of a vibration. Thanks

If you move the levers to the full on (max motion) position I bet the noise does not happen.
The lever turn on full hydraulic flow and pressure as soon as the valve handle is moved. this allows the pressure to be there when the valve actually lets fluid into the hose to move things. The noise is from the system being "on" with no where to go at part lever movement. The pressure reliev valve is making the noise. Very normal if as above it does not do it when the lever is full up or full down position> Jim

As Jim says, the valve timing is designed so the flow to the side of the valve that will be the "out" or pressure side is there before the "in" or return side opens. This prevents the cylinder from moving slightly in the wrong direction as the valve is moved. Because the "in" side is not open yet, or less open than the "out" side, the pressure is relieved over the relief valve, and they have tendancy to vibrate when barely opening or "cracking". Some relief valves can be pretty noisy or vibrate badly when cracking. You are lucky the hydraulic systems of that era are fairly low pressure.... a 5000 psi relief valve can have a [u:d910eea9e8]really[/u:d910eea9e8] loud squeal
Part of the noise is induced by the gear teeth creating pulses, and in some systems they set up a resonant frequency that aggravates the noise. You may find the noise is worse at some engine RPMs than others.

Mark, I have a Farmall 300 fasthitch set up exactly as yours. The noise you describe is completly normal (especially if you have an emplement raised and are lowering it slowly). Mine has been this way for several years and functions as it should. I don't think you have any problem.
