H rear wheel spacing

After painting, ready to tighten hubs on axles.
Wheels are dished out. Will be plowing with 2-16 Little Genius and want to pull straight off the swinging drawbar (not swung over.) Any recommended widths? I was thinking of adjusting so that exposed axle is the same measurement inside and outside of hub, but am not sure if this right. Any suggestions welcome.

The center of draft on a 2 bottom plow is about midway on the back bottom. So on a 16 in that will be about 24 inches from the furrow wall to center of draft. I'd say you will want your tires set about 30 inches center of tire to center of tractor. Yes, set both sides the same. About 32 in is about as narrow as you can go with the wheels dished out. Then adjust the hitch so the plow pulls straight.

Move that swinging drawbar clear over to the left side as far as you can get it and do not use it. Hook the plow clevis to the center hole in the horseshoe drawbar. Your plow will pull a lot easier if it is hitched as close to the tractor as you can get it. The right rear tractor wheel needs to be slid all the way in on the axle. I repeat, do not use the swinging drawbar. It was never intended to be used for pulling a plow.

Everybody here seems to be hungup on haveing wheels 'dished out'.Why?All my tractors are dished 'in' to run down a 30"corn row(60" center to center). As for pulling a two bottom.dished in might be best way to get to the right width. And remamber,A narrower dished in tractor is a lot easier to haul.

I pulled a 2-14" & a 2-16" with the family "H" in the 50s and plowed a lot of acres of Iowa black soil, and now again I use the same H to pull a #8 2-16" in our plow days here in Wisconsin.

Set the wheels so that about 1/2" - 1" of space is between the wheel and axle hub and that will do just fine. You might need to adjust the plow hitch a bit to also help in lining things up correctly.

I now live in rolling hills and dished in wheels are almost a guarantee you will have a roll over....sorry DeltaRed. And a Farmall with dished in wheels is butt ugly (there oughta be a law!).

There are no rules about using the swinging drawbar while plowing; it works just fine either way. Guys like me (75) need a little extra room while climbing off the tractor and the swinging drawbar in the center gives me that. It gives me more secure footing if I step on the U drawbar rather on the narrow swinging drawbar.
Slipping off the drawbar is not good when you get to be an old fossil.

Plowing is a lot of fun. Make sure you take time to sit and grin while plowing...life is good at that time in your life...at any age.

LA in WI

LA in WI is corect on setting and work just fine for 2-12" as well as that is what we pulled for years and that wheel tread will also work on 30" rows.

I plowed with the H my grandfather bought new in 1942. I used my 2-14 Oliver plow, swinging drawbar in the center position, wheels dished out, slid all the way in(12.4x38 tires). Everything worked fine, plow did a decent job in spite of very dry hard ground that was almost impossible to penentrate.

Thanks to all for comments. I'll take some careful measurements. Biggest thing now is springing for two rear tires and tubes. That's going to hurt but there's no way around it.

Not true with a sidehill hitch.

These pics are of my SH busting sod for a new garden. It has new 12.4x38" tires. Draw bar centered. Wheels dished out and set all the way in. 1 weight on each wheel and no fluid. Plow is a 2-14" #8 IH Little Genius. Plowed in 2nd. It worked perfect and the SH handled it with ease.
