How hot does a C200 manifold get?

I want to have my broken IH544 manifold brazed but the welder worries that it will get hot enough to soften the brass. I don"t think it gets that hot. Am I right?

I agree, the brass will not melt. I did some brazing on the exhaust manifold for my 200 and it does just fine. You have to heat the metal to "cherry red" before you apply the brass. Your tractor manifold will never get that hot.

listen to the welder.obviously you have never seen a manifold on a working tractor at night. they get chrry red. there is special welding rod for manifolds.brazing on exhuast is not recommended.

I have. Some get hot enough to show red in the dark but not in daylight or twilight. That"s about 400C. Brazing alloys don"t melt below 840C. That"s red in sunlight.

You can"t weld without melting the workpiece. I can"t see how that is not going to result in the formation of a band of white iron (and indeed what most welders have been telling me is "I can try to weld it with nickel rod. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn"t".)

I wouldn"t braze the exhaust headers on a race car, but then they aren"t likely to be cast iron.

there is cast rod for that type of welding. not nickel rod.i take my manifolds to a good professional welder that does excellent work and thats what he uses.like this guy is good and takes a lot of pride in his work. and i know for a fact he would not even attempt brazing.he also told me that the rod he uses is about ten times the price of ordinary rod.i know there is welders and there is welders.
